Balsam fir trees are arborvitaes that can grow to tremendous heights. What is its typical growth rate?

Balsam fir trees are well-suited for frigid temperatures. Its spiral crown, dark green pine needles, and semi-sweet scent are just some of the qualities that make this tree stand out. These trees are also often used as Christmas trees.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how this popular tree grows!

How Fast Do They Grow?

The balsam fir is a slow-growing tree, only growing around 12 inches each year.

Mature Size

Although it’s popular as a Christmas tree, the balsam fir can grow into a variety of shapes and sizes. Once mature, this tree will reach 50 – 75 feet tall and grow branches 20 – 25 feet long.

Where Do They Grow Best?

Balsam fir trees thrive in cooler climates; they do not fare well in high heat or humidity.

Balsam fir trees grow best in sandy, loamy, and acidic soil. The soil should also be moist and allow for adequate drainage for this tree to reach its full growth potential.

How Much Sun Do They Need?

This tree needs a combination of full sun and some shade. This means it should receive at least 4 hours of direct sunshine each day.

Tips to Optimize Growth Speed

If you’re contemplating planting a balsam fir tree, here are some tips for optimizing its growth.

1. Plant Appropriately

Choose a sunny or lightly shaded place to plant your tree. Planting it in an area that gets light, morning shade will help prevent frost damage during extreme cold. Water the tree deeply and apply 2 – 3 inches of organic mulch immediately after planting it.

2. Water Appropriately

Water young trees once a week, especially when there’s been a lack of precipitation. To ensure the tree gets the water it needs, use a soaker hose or bury a water hose under the mulch and let it run for an hour. This will help saturate the soil around the tree.

3. Space the Plants Correctly

Plant balsam fir trees so that there are 8 – 10 feet between each tree when pruned. Not only does this give the tree roots room to grow, but it also helps ensure the trees have access to the nutrients in the soil.

4. Fertilize Appropriately

A full-grown balsam fir tree does not need fertilizer. However, applying fertilizer to young balsam fir trees in the spring will help them grow faster! Make sure the fertilizer is properly balanced, and don’t over-fertilize; doing so can harm them.
